College of Charleston Sottile Theater Stefan Asbury, conductor
Led by renowned conductor Stefan Asbury, a regular with the world’s leading orchestras and Chief Conductor of the Noord Nederlands Orkest, the Spoleto Festival USA Orchestra presents a dazzling trio of orchestral showpieces. Bartók’s rarely-performed suite from the ballet The Wooden Prince is perhaps his most romantic and personal score, and is featured amidst works by Rimsky-Korsakov and Rachmaninoff that also have origins in folk music. Each of these energetic and brilliantly orchestrated works, with their virtuosic renderings of dance rhythms and lush melodies, represents the pinnacle of celebrating song with orchestral opulence.

Intermezzi: Copland & Stravinsky The gifted young conductor Aik Khai Pung leads the Festival Orchestra in a program including Copland’s spirited Music for the Theatre and Stravinsky’s Suite for Pulcinella, a warm and playful neoclassical masterpiece. Performed at the Cathedral of St. Luke and St. Paul.
