Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5
Program: Charlotte Symphony Classical Series Live Broadcast
Aired: Saturday, October 11, 2025 @ 7:30 pm
Hosted by Frank Dominguez
The Charlotte Symphony Orchestra season begins with a vivid work by Mason Bates that sets up a program of striking contrasts. Maestro Kwame Ryan leads the orchestra as cellist Joshua Roman joins for Shostakovich’s First Cello Concerto, a work marked by intensity, wit, and defiance during a turbulent era. The program concludes with Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony, written under political scrutiny yet filled with powerful emotion and quiet resilience.
