Vienna in the Wilderness: The Moravian Sound

The Moravians, early Protestants who immigrated to North Carolina and Pennsylvania from what is now the Czech Republic, thought music was essential to life. They brought classical music from Europe to America and transformed it. This program features works by composers John Antes, David Moritz Michael, and choral pieces by Johann Friedrich Peter, all performed at the first celebration of American Independence held in Salem, North Carolina, on July 4, 1783.
