WDAV to Say Goodbye to Performance Today
A Message from General Manager Frank Dominguez
Dear Listeners and Supporters,

I’m writing to make certain you know that, after twenty-five years, Fred Child is leaving Performance Today. For all that time, we’ve been proud that the series was part of WDAV’s schedule. But with Fred’s departure, the time has come for that long run to end.
This decision was not taken lightly. Performance Today played a role in our mission to enrich lives through diverse classical music experiences and excellent, accessible content. But with the loss of a quarter of a million dollars in federal funding, it has become imperative that we find ways to reduce costs significantly. Fundraising alone won’t be enough to meet this challenge.
Our highest priority is to preserve the locally scheduled and hosted classical music programming that research and experience show is most important to our listeners. Dropping the series is part of a larger cost-saving plan that will save WDAV more than $40,000 a year. That alone won’t bridge the gap in funding we face, but it will go a long way to ensure that WDAV can remain a strong local service that reaches a large audience while it amplifies the presence of the arts in our region.
We know many of you will miss the program, but fortunately, it will continue to be available to those listeners on the internet. We encourage you to seek it out online at the Performance Today webpage. You can also thank Fred and wish him well here.
Beginning on Monday, November 17 at 6 p.m., you’re invited to listen to WDAV for Supper Club with Phil Vavra. While it doesn’t replace Performance Today, we think you’ll find that it complements your early evening routine with a tasteful selection of classical music accompanied by Phil’s engaging hosting.
As we continue to navigate the shifting financial landscape for public radio, please know that the WDAV team remains committed to our core mission. We are taking action to ensure the classical programming you rely on continues to thrive. Thank you for your understanding as we manage this transition. We are confident in WDAV’s future and, with your support, we look forward to sharing the music you love for many years to come.
Yours sincerely,
Frank Dominguez
